Why do road tyres have grooved tread patterns?
SagotThe grooves channel water away from the contact patch so the rubber can grip a wet road, and they bite into loose or slippery surfaces. A bald or badly worn tyre cannot clear water and is far more likely to skid.
Grip depends on the rubber actually touching the road surface; a film of standing water acts like a lubricant unless the grooves can disperse it. Tread is a working safety feature, not decoration.

Which of the following is a genuine danger of driving on badly worn tyres?
- 1They take longer to stop, especially in the wet, and are more likely to puncture or skid.
- 2They improve fuel economy because there is less rubber dragging on the road.
- 3They make the steering lighter and easier to control at speed.
- 4They reduce road noise but have no effect on braking or cornering.
SagotThey take longer to stop, especially in the wet, and are more likely to puncture or skid.
Worn tread cannot disperse water, so wet braking and cornering grip collapse, and the thin remaining rubber is prone to bursts. Any perceived economy or comfort benefit is trivial beside the loss of control.

An under-inflated tyre wears out fastest along its outer edges, while an over-inflated tyre wears out fastest along the centre of its tread.
- 1True
- 2False
SagotTrue
Under-inflation lets the sidewalls sag so the shoulders carry the load, while over-inflation balloons the crown so the centre scrubs away. Uneven wear is a free diagnosis of the wrong pressure, and each error brings hidden penalties: under-inflation also overheats the carcass and saps fuel, while over-inflation shrinks the contact patch and degrades ride and grip.

What is the correct action if a tyre blows out while you are driving at speed?
SagotGrip the steering wheel firmly with both hands, keep the vehicle pointing straight, and ease off the accelerator so it slows by itself. Steer gently to a safe stopping place once the speed has fallen, braking only lightly at the very end.
Sudden braking or a violent steering jerk transfers load onto the burst tyre and can spin the car. Let drag and engine braking do the slowing so you keep directional control throughout.

What does a proper routine check of your tyres involve?
- 1Measuring the pressure when the tyres are cold with a reliable gauge, setting it to the maker's recommended figure, and looking over each tyre for cuts, bulges, cracks or embedded objects.
- 2Pressing the sidewall with your thumb to feel whether the tyre is hard enough.
- 3Checking the pressure only after a long drive, when the reading is at its highest.
- 4Inflating all four tyres to the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall.
SagotMeasuring the pressure when the tyres are cold with a reliable gauge, setting it to the maker's recommended figure, and looking over each tyre for cuts, bulges, cracks or embedded objects.
Cold readings are the accurate baseline that the recommended figures are based on, and pressure alone is not enough: a bulge or a slow leak from an embedded nail can hide inside a correctly inflated tyre. Thumb pressure and the sidewall maximum are no substitute for a gauge and the maker's own figure.
